Principal Consultant (Flood Risk)

We are an environmental team of passionate consultancy professionals who advise a wide range of clients across the UK and globally. 2016 was a great year for the team where we grew in staff numbers, expanded our service offering and received excellent feedback on our projects. This year has started strongly and we are on track to continue our successful growth, whilst next year we celebrate RPS’s 40th anniversary.

Role Outline:
We are looking for an experienced, motivated and diligent flood risk specialist looking to take up a senior position within a well-established and highly respected team Flood Risk team. The candidate will be responsible for technically reviewing Flood Risk Assessments, Sustainable Drainage Strategies and associated reports; preparing and reviewing fee quotes; liaising with clients and regulators; providing guidance and training to more junior staff members; expanding the team’s capabilities and identifying new business opportunities; and managing all aspects of projects (including budgets and schedules). The team’s growing client base includes property developers, architects, planners and property investors, primarily within the private sector.

Responsibilities include:
• Technically reviewing Flood Risk Assessments, Sustainable Drainage Strategies, Hydrology & Flood Risk chapters for Environment Statements and other associated reports prior to issue;
• Preparation of fee quotes and tenders, and technical review of those prepared by other team members;
• Provision of commercially focused, innovative, practical advice to clients at all stages of a project;
• Meeting attendance, liaison and negotiation with clients and regulators;
• Sourcing of fee quotes and advice from other RPS teams and external contractors (e.g. topographic surveyors, planning consultants, other technical specialists);
• Project management (e.g. managing budgets, ensuring client timeframes and objectives are met, regular communication with client, reviewing terms of contract, invoicing, ensuring internal Quality Control procedures are followed);
• Maintaining relationships with existing clients and developing opportunities with new clients through business development; and
• Mentoring, training and supervising more junior team members.

The successful candidate will be:
• An experienced, preferably chartered, professional with a strong proven track record within a consultancy environment;
• Diligent and enthusiastic, with demonstrable experience successfully managing client and staff relationships;
• Able to work independently, taking a leadership role with limited supervision;
• Able to inspire, manage and develop more junior team members;
• Focussed on delivering a high quality of service to clients, with emphasis on responsiveness, adaptability and prompt delivery;
• Able to provide innovative, commercially minded, high quality environmental solutions to our clients on time and budget;
• Proficient at negotiating with regulators on the client’s behalf, with a problem-solving attitude; and
• Able to demonstrate complete knowledge of the NPPF, associated PPG and SuDS guidance, with a good understanding of the UK planning regime.

Skills/Experience Required:
• Environmental Science, Hydrology or similar degree, preferably with a related MSc;
• Chartership with professional body (e.g. CIWEM), or working towards chartership;
• At least 7 years professional experience wholly or primarily in a consultancy environment, delivering to both public and private sector clients, with demonstrable experience delivering the areas of responsibility outlined above;
• Proven leadership qualities, with demonstrable experience understanding commercial and business drivers;
• Experience of Windes Microdrainage modelling and hydraulic modelling techniques (e.g. Infoworks RS, ISIS 1D/2D/Tuflow) an advantage;
• Expert Witness experience desirable but not essential.
